What Is an Inflation Calculator?
An inflation calculator estimates how the purchasing power of money changes over time. When prices rise, the same amount of money generally buys fewer goods and services. By comparing Consumer Price Index values between two periods, an inflation calculator can estimate how much money would be needed in one period to have approximately the same purchasing power as a different amount in another period.
How the U.S. CPI Inflation Calculator Works
The CPI section uses U.S. Consumer Price Index data. The basic historical calculation is based on the ratio of the CPI for the target period to the CPI for the starting period. If the CPI rises, the amount required to purchase an equivalent basket of goods and services also rises.
